Effectively Using Wall Papers for Decoration

Wall art plays an important role in interior design. It helps to create the ambience of a room. By placing wall pictures cleverly, you can change and create a new look and feel in a room

Types of wallpapers:

For better placement of wall pictures, first you have to know the types of wallpaper available and their uses. It helps you choose the right one for your needs.

Lining paper:

This does not give a decorative finish. It is generally used on bare walls and ceilings in
preparation for painting or papering. It covers strong colours already on the walls or ceiling.

Woodchip:

It has chips of wood on the finished side. It is available in various grades from fine to coarse according to the size of chips. It is useful for hiding defects in walls and can be used on most surfaces. Normally it is painted to give various colour schemes.

Pulps:

It is probably the cheapest type of wallpaper. It is a paper with a pattern printed upon it. It is easy to hang.

Washable:

This has a thin coat on transparent plastic over the pattern on an underlying pulp paper. The coating makes it more resistant to stains and marks. So they can be regularly wiped down.

Vinyl-coated:

It has a thin skin of vinyl with a paper backing, with any pattern printed onto the vinyl. It is easy to hang and fairly easy to strip. Washable and tough, it is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.

Vinyl:

This is tough as the vinyl skin is thicker than vinyl coated paper. It is hard to strip as the vinyl is largely impervious to water. Washable and tough, it is useful for kitchens and bathrooms.

Anaglyptic:

It is a plain embossed patterned paper, which is normally painted over. The patterns in it vary – from light, random line patterns to heavily embossed geometric patterns. It is suitable for hiding defects in walls. Depending upon the type of paint used, it can be repainted later to give a better facelift.

Embossed:

It has a decorative finish. It can be over painted either from day one, when the pattern becomes faded or just to give a facelift to a room.

Blown vinyl:

this sheet has the finish is vinyl giving it a tough surface finish

Flocks:

It is one of the oldest types of wallpaper having raised patterns in fibers, which has the look and feel of velvet.

Hand-printed:

It costs a lot of bucks. Generally it is supplied untrimmed and is not very widely available. Professional paper hangers should only hang it.

Arranging and hanging your pictures

To get the best effect from your wall pictures in terms of adding character and a focal point to the room, you have to decide on where and how to hang them. Here are some suggestions that help you to get the best effects from your pictures.

Create a modern feel:

To create a modern art gallery feel, particularly in hallways, lobbies and stairwells, give each piece ample breathing room.

Above a sofa:

If you are placing wall picture above furniture such as a sofa, you have to hang the picture about six to nine inches above the sofa or at eye level.

Cluster arrangements:

Tightly group an even number of pictures together to create a statement or a focal point. It works on either large or small wall spaces, depending on what look you want to get.

In a row:

If you place an odd number of pictures in a horizontal line to each other, it gives balance and sense of space. It works well in hallways or stairways.
