Colors and their uses:

There are generally four basic colors - blue, red, green and yellow. All other colors that are used in paint and other decorations are variations of these four colours. Black and white are not considered as colours. Each colour has different effects and their use can affect the way people feel and respond.

Blue

This color helps in relaxing and gives calmness and harmony. When used in large blocks, it can make the room space seem larger. It is ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms. It should not be used in areas which require stimulation or keeping awake, such as TV hall.

Red

It is related to anger and danger, and stimulates and promotes these activities. In case of large blocks it seems to advance towards you. So it can make rooms look smaller. It is useful in areas of activity as it quickens the wits and stimulates. However it can make someone who spent a lot of time surrounded by more of red colour tired. So it is not ideal for places where you have to relax such as bedrooms.

Green

It is helpful in cleansing and instills contemplation. It is suitable for places where you need to think such as study rooms.

Yellow

It resembles happiness and brightens the mood. It can make one laugh and smile. It is a refreshing colour and promotes intellectual activities. It makes rooms seem smaller. It is suitable for areas where a bright mood is necessary such as areas used for entertainment like TV rooms.

Colors- solutions for different problems

Proper combination and use of different colours helps overcome different situations and problems.

Here are some examples on how colors are helpful.

Problem:

When the room seems dark with little natural light.

Solution:

It can be solved by using white, cream, or yellow as predominant colour along with plenty of bright-colour accents. With the help of mirrors you can make the most of the little light available. Try to keep the flooring pale.

Problem:

When room seems cold and light comes from north or east direction.

Solution:

For this you can use warm colours from red, orange, or yellow part of colour wheel. Along with this add plenty of warm textures in furnishing materials.

Problem:

When ceiling seems too high.

Solution:

Paint ceiling in a dark colour, for example in bright red. Dark cool colours like deep blue or green are also effective. Use this colour partly down the walls to picture-rail height. It can be done by adding a border or frieze with paper or stencils. Keep the flooring dark and paint the skirting with the same colour. Don’t use vertical patterns for the wall-covering and select one with horizontal or non-directional emphasis.

Problem:

When ceiling seems too low.

Solution:

Paint ceiling in light colour with colours like pale blue, pale green or blue-grey. Apply a wall-covering with a vertical emphasis. Paint skirting in same colour as wails. Keep furniture at low level. Keep floor coverings in pale.

Problem:

When the room is narrow.

Solution:

>Paint end wail in a warm and advancing colour. It’s better to use floor covering with crossways stripe. Otherwise use a plain one and paint the skirting with the same colour.

Problem:

When the room seems too small.

Solution:

Use wall-covering with a small pattern in pale colours. Mirrors are helpful in giving an illusion of more space.
