One wants to keep one’s house free of pests, insects as it is a major investment and one also has to live in there. It should be clean and tidy and devoid of dirt and filth, which includes the menace of termites, which are white ants. One has to get rid of them. Or else they will “eat away your house slowly”. How to get rid of them?
Tips to Get Rid of Termites
- Waste timber from construction activities is often left in place or stored under the house. This should be avoided
- Termites eat wood; so one should remove such items, which happen to be good termite food away from buildings. Items such as timber stacks, old stumps, building refuse, garden decoration such as sleepers and logs should be kept away
- Water attracts termites. One should fix leaking water pipes, drains, showers, sinks etc, plus capture water from air conditioning unit
- Timber helps to prevent termite attack, and some timbers are naturally resistant - use treated or naturally resistant timber when it is in contact with, or close to, soil
- Termites cannot chew through properly laid concrete, so one can ensure that concrete slab is properly designed, compacted, and cured
- Humid conditions attract termites. Air under the house should be kept dry by improving sub-floor ventilation, drainage and access
- One can get rid of the termites by killing the reproductives (the queen and the king).
- Regular inspections should be made around the house. One should control them before they can do any damage
- Inspection should be done during periods of high termite activity - early spring to late summer
- The edges of the house (slabs, foundation, piers and stumps should be kept clear of clutter
- Professional pest controllers are there to help out
- Termite checkups should be done as frequently as possible
Taking good care of the house is indeed a major responsibility. Getting rid of termites is equally important. The house should be free of termites. Get rid of them as quickly as possible.
