Blending the comfort of your home with the formality of a work place will give you your Home Office. You should keep the décor such that the official look of your office would get you into the “work” mood and the comfort of your home will make you feel a little chilled out. This would make your home office an enjoyable yet productive space.
Once you finalize the space or room in your house for your home office. You should begin to think of the environment. It should compliment the kind of work you do plus it should suit your needs.
Now think of the “look” for your office – color scheme, décor and feel.
Unlike the usual ‘cool and corporate’ look adopted by regular offices. You should strive for a rather warm and smart look. It should be formal but smart casual in its feel. If you have visitors coming over to your office, then you should really work hard on your office décor. It should seem to your visitors that you are an organized and a serious professional. A lousy and unorganized home office will give your visitors an impression that you are very laid back about your work as well.
Choosing the right colors for your home office is the trickiest part of decorating your home office. If you are one of those very easily distracted people then you should avoid brighter colors. Soft muted colors that have a calming and relaxing affect will help you get into the mood for working. If you don’t like the dull analogous boring neutral colors in your office, you should chose brighter colors that are vibrant and invigorating in order to pep up your energy levels and motivate you for work.
Cool colors like blues, greens and purples don’t distract. Psychologically these colors have a calming and soothing effect. That is why you see that most offices extensively use these colors.
Fresh greens are natural and restful colors. They can keep your mood pepped up and fresh. Warm colors like reds, oranges and yellows will make your office appear cozy and warm. These colors are also very invigorating and enlivening. But they are also likely to distract.
Whites represent peace and serenity. Whites also give your office is a crisp and clean look. Neutral colors blend easily and are very versatile to use. They are not distracting.
Depending on the color you can decide on the décor – the color of your furniture, the material to be used, the color of blinds, bookshelves, file shelves, pen stands, carpets, mats and rugs.
The idea is to co-ordinate all these three elements to create that perfect and organized look for your office.
