The space constraint is the biggest challenge in decorating small homes. You have a challenge to decorate your small home to look lavish yet uncluttered. Decoration is not just about incorporating as much furniture as possible. Decoration is all about wise usage of space and furniture. You can play in on the light, the color of the walls, the accessories and yes the magic mirrors in order to make the rooms look airy and spacious with all that décor. Here are some simple tips that you may find useful in decorating your little cozy home –

  • Be a minimalist when it comes to buying furniture. The things in your house are likely to multiply over a period of time. You don’t want to start with an already crowded house and end up worrying where to store all the extra stuff you got over time.
  • Avoid using ceiling lighting. Ceiling lights tend to cut the height of the room. You can try using that if your rooms have a good height.
  • Ceilings should be lighter than the color of the wall and the rest of the furniture for that matter. That is why you see that many apartments color the ceiling white and color the walls in a different color.
  • Choose soft monochromatic color schemes so that they make your rooms appear bigger. If you fancy double shaded rooms, then you will have to wait till you buy a bigger home.
  • Intelligent lighting can also create an illusion of big rooms. You can use soft incandescent lights placed evenly throughout the room. This will eliminate shadows and make the room appear larger.
  • Mirrors have always been a favorite when it comes to decorating smaller homes. You can use as many mirrors as you want. You can hang small mirrors one beside other like you hang picture frames. If you place big mirrors opposite to each other they will add an extra dimension to the walls by reflecting each other. Be careful to place mirrors at eye level. If your bedroom is very small you can try fixing a full-length mirror on the doors of your wardrobe.
  • Buy furniture that gives you a lot of storage space too. Like there are beds that give you storage space within.
  • Place your furniture such that there is ample space for walking around.
  • Buy small pieces of furniture that can be moved around easily.
  • Keep the largest piece of furniture by the longest wall of the room.
  • If you have space constraints buy space saving TV stands so that you can save space by keeping your TV mounted by the wall.
  • Do not use dark color or very light colored curtains. They should go with the theme of your rooms. Keep your furnishings light.
