Know Your Kitchen Layout
How efficiently you can use your kitchen depends on how well it is laid out. In fact, a small kitchen can be effectively used if it is laid out properly. This is because a good layout ensures effective utilization of available space and can add aesthetic value. When start planning for kitchen, you should keep in mind the work flow between areas of main activities. This can help you to draw kitchen plan accordingly and ensure easy movement and accessibility.
Types of Kitchen Layouts:
To draw a good layout for your kitchen, you should have good understanding of different types of layouts and their particular features. The final layout of your kitchen will be dependent on the shape, size of the room and on your taste.
Listed below are different types of kitchen layouts along with some tips:
- Single-Line Kitchen Layout: If you have small and narrow space, single-line kitchen can be a good option. Generally, this type of kitchen layout needs at least 3 metres of wall space with no windows or doors. You can use the wall space over your head as storage space for most of your things. This will leave you free counter space to do chopping and other activities. Here, you have to place your cooking range, refrigerator and sink in one line. However, this type of layout can make you walk the maximum distance from one end to the other end of the room.
- Galley Kitchen layout: Galley kitchen is mostly liked by professionals as it makes the most effective utilization of space. Also, if you have a small apartment, this type of layout can also be your option. This type of layout is good where there is limited space. Minimum requirement of 47 inch space between two rows can give enough room to move and do things properly.
- L-Shaped Kitchen Layout: This kitchen can be ideally used as a family kitchen or for entertaining guests. Using two adjacent walls, this type of layout allows enough areas for preparation space between stove, sink and refrigerator. Ideal for large rooms, narrow rooms or long rooms, L-shaped kitchen provides you free workspace and enough storage space. The design can reduce walking distances between main working areas. If you have additional space, you can consider placing a centre island which can act as a platform to keep fresh vegetables and fruits. This can also double up as your breakfast table.
- Island Kitchen: This kitchen is ideal if you require additional space to entertain your guests, yet need more floor space. You can place a separate island unit facing your living or dining area. This kitchen will allow you to socialize while preparing a meal.
- U-Shape Kitchen Layout: U-shape kitchen layout makes full utilization of three walls which makes it a perfect working kitchen for serious cooks. You can space out the range, sink and refrigerator which can give you ample space to move around, yet provide the shortest distance around, ensuring best work flow. It can also allow good countertop space and large storage space.
However attractive a kitchen layout may look now, you may still want some changes when applying it to your own kitchen. This is because every kitchen is different in terms of its shape and size and you may want to stamp your own individual style. By giving careful thoughts, you can draw a good layout for your kitchen.
