How To Lay Laminate Flooring?

Laminate flooring is a multipurpose material that could be used on any dry, firm and levelled surface. If laminate flooring has to be laid on a cement floor then self leveling ground can be used to even out bumpy and rough surface. Similarly, in case of wooden surface nails and screws must be flattened down to avoid any damage to laminate.

Types Of Under lay’s:
There few types of under lays which are used before laying the actual laminate;

  • Poly Foam: it is the thinnest material used for under laying. It is useful for firm dry and leveled floor like wooden floor. Before preparing a floor make sure that a damp-proofing layer is used first. Then, arrange the layers next to each other and trim to size leaving 10 mm gaps around pipes.
  • Combined Underlay: it is slightly thicker than poly foam so it can be used for more uneven surfaces and it provides better sound insulation. This underlay provides damp proving and underlay in one material and can be laid down flat.
  • Wood Fiber Boards: these are thickest of all underlay and could be used on any kind of uneven surfaces. It provides good insulation for sound and heat and will need damp proofing layer if required.

Locking Laminate Flooring:
Flooring boards already have inter locking tongues for easy fitting and locking. These could be easily opened in case of shifting.

Fitting the boards is easy but it should be kept in mind that these contract and expand with climatic conditions so the space should be left in between them for the purpose. Approximately 10 mm of space should be left in between and the skirting. The board should be laid length wise towards the light source from left hand side. Fit the spacers between the walls ensuring that board is parallel to the wall. The next board should be laid end to end to the first board ensuring that the tongues are locked together. In order to lock tongues slide the board at 30 degrees so that it slots in when lowered. Continue this pattern till you reach the end. Last board will require fitting.
