How To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are brown color, wingless creature which is one fourth to half an inch long. Bed bugs hide in small cracks and crevices and are hard to find. To eliminate them is even harder. Bed bugs can survive for one year or so without feeding on a blood source. Bed bugs create an ever-ending population as their female lay more than 3000 eggs at a time. So in such a case it is next to impossible to get rid of them totally. But still few measures are discussed below:

Methods To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs:

  • Once bed bugs prepare their colony in your bed it is very difficult to remove them. Only laundering bed sheets and dusting off bed would no longer help. Furniture should be overturned, wood moldings, picture frames and closets should be inspected properly.
  • Bed bugs have tendency to hide. They can hide in any thin place which comes their way. So, loose paper walls, crevices on walls and furniture and carpets, outlet covers, light fixtures, smoke detectors even clocks any place you think of must be checked.
  • Items which are washable can be removed and cleaned in hot water. Non washable items can be kept in direct sunlight. The  whole idea is to raise temperature above 120F which can kill the insect and eggs.
  • Spray of rubbing alcohol can be used to kill them on the spot. Use rubbing alcohol and dish brush to kill eggs.
  • Spraying of pesticides and insecticide which was earlier used to solve  the purpose but it is no longer in use now.
  • Eliminate the sites of their halt like plaster the crevices, glue the loosened wall papers, remove birds nest and animal roosts when required.
  • Residual insecticides are used as spot treatments in crevices and holes of bed etc. where they can hide.

Prevention:

  • It is well known that ‘Prevention is better than cure’ so we can take few primitive steps in order to stop entry of bed bugs in our homes. Some of them can be:
  • Always be cautious while purchasing second hand furniture. It might carry colony of bed bugs to your home.
  • Be careful while travelling, especially in trains, seats might be having them or luggage of other passenger can have few of them.
  • So, a few cautious steps can prevent entry of bed bugs in your home.
