Wet Basement Solutions

Basement:

A basement is a floor of the building that is either partially or completely below ground floor. They are basically used as utility spaces. Most of them put it to use as a car park, air-conditioning system or water heater. Few of them also use it as a cable television point.
Most of the basements are wet throughout the year. This is mostly due to drainage problems. Given below are few options by which we can avoid the water collection in basements.

Methods:

Keep Rain Gutters Clean

Rain gutters should be cleaned atleast 2 times in an year. It is most important during the Fall time when leaves fall. The gutters are to be checked during rain storm. This would assure that none of the gutters are over flowing.
The water connections should also be checked for fittings. Get gutter gueards installed to prevent leaves from falling into the rain gutters.

Downspout Connections

The down spouts must be directed 10 to 20 feet away from the foundation. The best way is when they discharge water down a slope away from the basement.
Never bury the dow spout extensions or connect them to drywells. Drywells wont hold much water and the water would back-up.
Connecting the gutter to sewer systems can be a big hassle. It can cause rapid backups.

Check the Yard Slopes

The worst situation arises when the house is on a slope. It directs surface water to the basements.
The more surface water you can remove, the lesser the chances of water to enter the basement.
In number of cases, setting the contour of the land is all that’s required.

Shut the Doors and Windows

Keeping the doors and windows of the basement open increases your problems. This is because it would allow humidity. When humidity comes in contact with cooler walls and floors of the basement, condensation would occur. Thus water would be colected. So keeping them shut is the best alternative.
